Choosing outfits doesn’t have to be the hardest part of planning your photo session. With a few simple choices, your photos can feel timeless, cohesive, and beautifully true to your family. I’ve put together a list of my favorite styling tips and tricks to help you feel confident while planning.
When you’re planning your outfits, start with mom’s outfit. Everything flows from her look — the tones, the textures, the overall feel. Once you choose mom’s outfit, coordinating everyone else becomes so much simpler. Think of her outfit as the anchor and build around it.
I always recommend sticking to colors that feel gentle and natural: creams, warm neutrals, sage, dusty blue, soft browns, and other earthy tones. These shades photograph beautifully in both studio and outdoor settings, and they keep the focus exactly where it belongs — on your connection, your expressions, and the story unfolding in front of the camera.
When it comes to coordinating, aim for harmony rather than matching. You don’t need everyone in the same color or the same outfit. Instead, choose pieces that complement each other — similar tones, soft textures, and a mix of layers that add depth without distraction. Matching can feel flat; coordinating feels elevated and effortless.
And above all, keep it timeless. Skip logos, bright colors, and busy patterns. Simple clothing creates classic images that will look just as beautiful ten years from now as they do today.
